The Rise of the Generalist: Why the Future Asset Manager Speaks More Than Just Numbers

For years, asset managers in real estate were celebrated for their technical fluency—financial modeling, lease structures, ROI performance. It was about precision, data, and measurable returns.

But the world has changed. And the job has too.

Speaking with peers and industry leaders at #CREAMUK this week, my various conversations culminated with several observations I would like to share here.

Today, success isn’t just about managing buildings. It’s about managing complexity—of people, of systems, of fast-moving change. The best asset managers I see rising now? They’re generalists. Strategic thinkers. Empathic communicators. Translators between spreadsheets and human experience.

Real Estate Is No Longer Just a Numbers Game

Our industry sits at the intersection of powerful forces:

– ESG and climate resilience

Digital transformation

– Evolving tenant expectations

– Market and capital volatility

Managing an asset today means navigating relationships, risk, and reputation. It’s no longer enough to deliver IRR. You need to deliver trust—to investors, to communities, to your own teams.

Soft Skills Are Becoming Power Skills

The most valuable conversations I have with peers aren’t about square footage or leasing velocity. They’re about people.

How do we build alignment across internal teams and external stakeholders?
How do we communicate sustainability strategies with clarity and confidence?
How do we lead when we’re not the loudest voice in the room—but the one bringing everyone together?

It’s in these questions that the future asset manager shows up—not just as a subject-matter expert, but as a connector and a leader.

The Case for the Generalist Mindset

Being a generalist doesn’t mean knowing a little about a lot. It means:

– Seeing across internal teams and external stakeholders
– Asking better questions, not just offering fast answers
– Balancing detail with big-picture thinking

– Translating complexity into clarity

– Leading with empathy in an industry built on hard assets

Where Do We Go From Here?

If you’re building a career in asset management: lean into breadth. Stay curious. Learn the language of other disciplines—sustainability, operations, IT & tech, design, capital markets—and be the bridge.

If you’re hiring or mentoring asset managers: invest in communication, adaptability, and soft skills training. Your next top performer might not have the sharpest Excel skills—but they’ll bring people to the table, get buy-in, and drive results in ways the spreadsheet alone never could.

The asset managers of the future won’t just manage buildings. They’ll manage change.

Let’s build that future—one conversation, one skill, one perspective at a time.

Consultancy has many connotations, not all of them positive. There are those who are stellar and harnessed by companies seeking thought leadership or brand association. There are those for whom consultancy is a willing pair of hands for that specialist, business critical project, or transformation programme. The third category is where we find most of our consultancy assignments, and it’s working to find lasting fixes to deep-seated problems.
